How Does God Use a Small, Simple Soul?

You might think that a small, simple soul would feel lost or overwhelmed by the “bigness” of God.  But I don’t.  His presence is the place I feel most at home.  He is my Father, after all, and if you look carefully, you can see a little of His image slow-growing in me.

As one of His children, I want to please Him.  And I want to be used by Him.

But I am just such a normal person.  I live in a small house, on the edge of a field of Hereford cattle, and that house needs the carpet replaced. I drive an overly-large SUV left over from the days of hauling around my three boys, with more miles on it than you would believe.  I tend to have just two or three people I consider close friends.

My husband on the other hand, we jokingly refer to as a local celebrity.  I really think everyone in our small town knows him.  He is lightning, and I am gentle rain. We complement each other well.  But. . . I am often tempted to look at his life and think, “There—that’s how it is done.  That’s how God can use people.”

So how does God use a small, simple soul like mine?  Like yours?

In everyday ways and unexpected ways.  In beautiful ways.  In painful ways.  If only we let Him.

Because, dear sister, it’s not really about us.  It’s about God.

If I only look at me:

I am the woman at the well, hiding from the mess of my life.

I am the fishermen called to follow Jesus, woefully inadequate for the job.

I am the boy who gave his 5 loaves and 2 small fish, knowing it would never be enough.

But, “never enough” has never mattered to God.

In fact, using “never enough” is rather His specialty.  The woman at the well’s mess became her testimony, and many believed.  The fishermen became disciples, and spread the gospel for Jesus.  The loaves and fish were multiplied and fed the thousands.

All because they were placed in the hands of a loving, limitless God.

So know this, nothing—nothingdiscredits you from serving God if you have accepted the salvation He offers through Jesus.

In the weeks to come, I want to share with you Biblical insights, morning devotionals, and everyday musings on how to be the owner of a small, simple soul.  But more than that, I want to point you toward the One who made that soul—our loving, limitless God.

Until next time,

Shelby

John 4:39: Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”
