How Does God See My Small, Simple Soul?

Hello, beautiful soul!  I am so glad you have joined me for another conversation about living a full life for God as a small, simple soul.    Today’s thoughts are in the form of a devotional—something I’d like to deliver on Mondays to keep us mindful of God as we launch our week.

How Does God See My Small, Simple Soul?

Psalm 139:14:   Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (ESV)

I seem to have an affinity for people who unabashedly own quirky personalities.  When I am around them, it feels easier to be me, as if their confidence somehow bolsters my own.  My small, quiet soul seems to sing a little louder and love a little freer.

I love being around these beautiful souls!

But there is a danger there.  The danger of comparison.

Theirs are the souls that sing in the hallway, hug strangers, and fill up rooms with laughter.  And I am the quiet soul who breathes it in and wonders how it is done.  Sometimes, in those moments, I feel less than.  But God has been speaking to me about that, and though it’s taken a while to sink in, I think I’m beginning to hear an important truth.

If you have ever read any of the Psalms, then you will know that they are a set of songs written to God.  Many were written by King David, but others have various authors.  Psalm 139 is a rather “famous” Psalm, which includes the verse, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (v. 14)

But have you ever paid attention to the rest of the verse?

I says, “Wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well.”  The New Living Translation phrases it as, “Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.”

Friend, that includes me.  That includes you.

You are His workmanship, and  You. Are. Marvelous.

Depending on the day, I revel in this truth or I rebel against it.  Perhaps you do, too.

You see, sometimes it is easier for us to accept “fearfully and wonderfully made,” because we focus was on the incredible power of God in creation.  He made neural pathways, beating hearts, and immune systems.  He made fingerprints, freckles, and pinky toes.  All wonderful indeed!

But when it comes to who we are as a person—our quirks, our gifts, our dreams, our longings—we just can’t quite believe He means it.  Surely, we may think, I am not quite what He had intended.  But we cannot deny that each of us—body AND soul—is God’s workmanship.  And God’s holy word declares that ALL of His works are wonderful!

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m still a hot mess.  After all, we live in a sinful and broken world as sinful and broken people.  But Jesus, through his sacrifice on the cross, has made me right with God (Romans 5:1). Now I can spend the rest of my life being transformed into the person God always meant for me to be (Phil. 1:6).  I can spend the rest of my life allowing my small, simple soul to become more like Jesus, who redeems all of me—including my quirks, my gifts, my dreams, and my longings.

So, my friend, you can trust God with who you are.  Trust that he doesn’t just love you; God—the Creator of the Universe—likes you.  And He says that you are marvelous indeed.

A Simple Prayer for Today:  Father, thank you so much for both loving me and liking me.  When insecurities strike, help my soul know very well that, “wonderful are your works,” and I am one of them.
