Psalm 9:1: I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
My small, simple soul loves this time of year. It holds the promise of the holidays without the urgent hustle and bustle that seems to arrive in December.
I also think my soul has a natural bent towards thankfulness.
Little things bring me joy. I love to thank God for the beautiful leaves, the chill in the air, and even the season’s first pot of homemade soup.
But sometimes thanksgiving flows not from outward joys, but from a place of aching deep in our heart.

In today’s key verse, David has written a Psalm after the death of his son. And the first words he sings are, “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds” (Psalm 9:1).
Does that stop you in your tracks?
Yes, we live in a broken world that in turn breaks our hearts.
. . .But Jesus.
In Jesus we have:
- comfort (Matthew 5:4)
- hope (Titus 2:13)
- peace (John 16:33)
- a restored relationship with God (2 Corinthians 5:17-19)
- a promised future (Revelation 21:3-4)
So if you are struggling to feel thankful this season, turn your eyes toward Jesus. He is right there with you in the middle of the hurt.
And if our souls can give thanks for nothing else, they can still choose to give thanks for Him.
The One who saved us. Jesus.
Until next time,
Shelby
