I Long to Hear “Well Done.”

Matthew 10:2-4: “The names of the twelve apostles are these:  first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.”

When I was young, I always thought the disciple to whom I related most was Peter.  I mean, who doesn’t love his unique mixture of boldness and blatant flaws? He is simply so relatable.

But as I have grown and learned more about myself, I have changed my mind.  Would you like to know to which disciple I now most relate?

James, the son of Alphaeus.

Do you know what James, son of Alphaeus is known for?

. . . Me neither!

The Bible tells us only his name.  Even history and legend remain silent.

The one thing we do know is that when James was called to follow Jesus, he did.

James was obedient.  And as one of the twelve, he certainly served Jesus and had an intimate relationship with the very Son of God.

And that’s enough.  The rest is between God and him.

Can you relate?

The small, simple acts of service we live out may never bring recognition or praise.  And that’s ok.  If you are like me, my small, simple soul doesn’t crave the spotlight or a vast following on social media.

Let there be but one thing we long for.  Let us long to be obedient.  To let the little things of our lives be done for God’s glory.  Let us long, one day, to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

Because that, friend, is MORE than enough.

Until next time,

Shelby
