Becoming with God

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6).

I am near the end of my first career, my kids are growing up and leaving home, and I think I am just now figuring out who I am.

Sometimes I worry that I missed out because I was trying to be someone I was not.  I felt too quiet, too intellectual, too lost in my head.  So I tried to be more.  More what?  More of anything else.  More like everyone else.  And it simply didn’t work.

It took 50 years for God to walk me through “becoming.”  Becoming more of how He created me.  Becoming aware of His gifts in me.  Becoming joyful in my own skin.

I don’t think this is a unique experience.

Becoming can be a difficult process as false beliefs are stripped away, pride is traded for humility, and room is made for God over self.  This is the process of sanctification, and it is truly a life-long journey.  I am also convinced that it is the only path to discovering who we were truly meant to be.

So if you still haven’t quite figured it out—who you are, who you want to be, what God has in store for you—can I offer some encouragement?  It’s okay.  You’re okay.

God isn’t done with you yet.  As “partakers . . .of grace” (Philippians 1:7) we are promised that “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6).

Until next time,

Shelby
